From Outdoor to Outdoor – A Changed Lifestyle

Over the past four decades, the way we socialize and enjoy nature has undergone an exciting transformation. What was once a simple and traditional outdoor culture has evolved into a global and multifaceted outdoor movement.

But what does this change really look like, and how have our activities, clothing and equipment evolved?

Then: The Simple Pleasures of the Outdoors

In the 1980s and earlier, outdoor life was strongly rooted in Scandinavian tradition – it was about simplicity and closeness to nature. Imagine hikes in the forest, fishing, mushroom picking and simple tent camps by a lake. The clothes were robust, often heavy and functional, but without the technical features we see today. The equipment consisted of the bare essentials – backpacks, tents and sleeping bags – which did the job but did not always focus on comfort.

Now: A Global Outdoor Movement

Today, the outdoors is much more than just a refuge from the stresses of the city – it has become a lifestyle. Outdoor culture is now a global phenomenon, and activities have expanded to include everything from rock climbing and trail running to mountain biking and paddle boarding. We don’t just seek the peace of nature, we seek adventures and challenges that bring us closer to both ourselves and the world around us.

How clothing and equipment have evolved

This transformation has led to enormous advances in clothing and equipment. Today's outdoor clothing is technologically advanced and designed to withstand both extreme conditions and everyday adventures. We have gone from heavy wool sweaters to lightweight, windproof and waterproof materials that breathe and keep the body at a comfortable temperature. The layering principle has become standard, and innovations such as Gore-Tex, fleece and recycled materials have changed the way we dress when we are out in nature.

Equipment has become just as advanced – ultralight tents, multi-functional tools and compact technology like GPS watches and action cameras have made it easier to both plan and document our adventures. In addition, sustainability has taken on an increasingly important role in the development of both clothing and equipment, with the goal of creating products that are both long-lasting and environmentally friendly.

The future of the outdoor lifestyle

It’s clear that the way we enjoy nature has changed, but our love of the outdoors remains constant. Whether we’re seeking the tranquility of a mountain lake or the adrenaline rush of a hiking trail in the Alps, the clothing and gear we use have adapted to meet our modern needs. Mountain Works has been part of this journey, and we continue to create garments and products that help you meet the challenges of nature with both style and function.
